The One With Mu Dan Ting – Chinese Buffet At A Great Price

“That price to eat all you can? Dim sum and Chinese dishes? Are you sure?”

That was my first reaction when we reached Mu Dan Ting restaurant located at Pacific Centre at Tsim Sha Tsui. You would have the same reaction too when the price to eat all the dim sum and Chinese dishes you want is an affordable sum of $138.

Yes, that’s HKD. As in, like, S$20.

I can’t really tell you much about what I ordered. That’s because I didn’t. The entire menu was in Chinese.

But what I can tell you that, despite my initial skepticism of its quality (you get what you pay for, and all that theory), the food turned out to be surprisingly good.

The One With Pee Long Thai – Disappointing Thai Fare

There is a little Thailand in every country. Everyone loves a little bit of that culture, food and hospitality from the Land of A Thousand Smiles, so it was a delight for me to walk down the Thailand “town” in Hong Kong, located roughly along two main streets in Kowloon City.

We were starving and were desperate for some Thai food. Our first choice was closed until 6 p.m. – I won’t blame them; afterall, who in Hong Kong have dinner at 5-ish in the afternoon? – so we settled for the next tiny restaurant with the curious name of Pee Long Thai.

The eatery itself looked promising. A tiny shop with a handful of tables and wait staff speaking in perfect Thai and surprisingly good Cantonese. We settled down at a rickety table, full of anticipation for some Thai goodies.

But alas, we were in for a disappointment.

Pee Long Thai

No one in the right mind having Thai food would give this famous dish a miss. Pee Long Thai did this pretty decently. It wasn’t as spicy as it looks, probably because the taste was attuned to the local tongue, but both my friend and I agreed that the soup lacked that punch. Which is surprising, because there were two Thai women manning the (somewhat) open kitchen, and you would think they could do a punchier job.

The One With Riquiqui Dessert Bar – Tiny In French

Riquiqui Dessert Bar

There are many reasons why you will overspent at Riquiqui (pronounced ri.ki.ki, means tiny in French).

For one, there is no price listed on the menu. You can just the set of three desserts, which starts with…. something, and then some main course you choose from the board, and then ending with… something.

That’s how bad I am with dessert.

The One With Chung Gye Chon – Korean BBQ & Spicy Kimchi

Did you know there is a Korean Street in Hong Kong? No? Neither did I, until earlier last week when my friends detoured from our usual haunts on Hong Island ventured to Kowloon for a spot of Korean BBQ.

Korean BBQ At Chung Gye Chon, Tsim Sha Tsui

The restaurant for the night was Chung Gye Chon, located at Kimberley Street at Tsim Sha Tsui. Various Korean eateries dot along this road, so you will be hard pressed for choice to dine out here. Ours was illuminated by a large orange sign so it will be hard to miss.

The One With Fifteen Tower Tauge Chicken

Whenever I told someone that I was from Ipoh, all they can think of is food. Hardly surprising; by the look of yours truly they would assume that Ipoh is a town of well rounded folks.

But of course. Right at the top of the list would be the famous Ipoh hor fun; a specialty of Ipoh which include flat white noodle in soup and chicken.

(P.S.: I have tried countless Ipoh hor fun at other places but nothing even come close to the original thing).

So during the recent trip home, some indulging was in order. Fifteen Tower Tauge Chicken (tauge means bean sprouts) was the choice of the day. Here are some food porn to get you salivating today.

Fifteen Tower stall has few chickens and even fewer tables, so come early to stake your claim or risk walking away hungry.
